Acupuncture in Bainbridge Island
Acupuncture works with your bodies intricate energetic system. In Chinese medicine your energy is called Qi (Chee) and is best defined as your vital life force. This qi circulates throughout the body via energetic pathways called meridians and channels forming a system of its own closely related to the sensory system for the circulation system. For a more tangible understanding of the term in Western Medical Theory, energy can be defined as ATP from food or action potentials that propagate along the nervous system.
There is a saying in Chinese medicine “Where there is stagnation [of qi], there is pain.” Acupuncture in Bainbridge Island works to unblock this stagnation and alleviate pain by causing a sensory response to the brain by way of needle insertion. Stimulation of the various layers of tissues initiates the movement and circulation of qi along the energy pathways.
When the qi is free flowing and without obstruction it allows other systems to function and regulate themselves properly such as such as body’s temperature and pressure systems. In turn, triggering the bodies innate regenerative processes.
Acupuncture is a treatment modality that has been practiced for thousands of years. Traditionally, in Chinese medicine, these fine hair-like needles have been used to treat a variety of ailments with a scope of practice that can be as extensive and broad as that of Western medicine with its strength being in realigning the body with the nature’s timing in terms of rates and rhythmicity. This covers sleep, digestive and hormonal cycles as they related to the seasons and times of day.
This was my first experience with acupuncture, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Tiffanie was patient, kind and talked with me through the experience and answered all of my questions. I left feeling great! Wondering if really there had been any change, and in fact, she completely addressed the needs I discussed with her. I felt the positive change for one week or so. Looking forward to going back!

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO ACUPUNCTURE?
After an acupuncture treatment at Living Well Chiropractic & Massage you will be advised to rest and drink extra water. Most people feel very relaxed and energized after an acupuncture treatment. On occasion you may experience a small bruise where a needle was inserted. If you experience any pain, large bruises, swelling, difficulty breathing, or dizziness after an acupuncture treatment, advise your practitioner or doctor immediately.
DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
It is normal to experience mild discomfort with the needles; however, these needles are as fine as a human hair and they are inserted with a guide tube with a quick tap faster than the brain can really react to the superficial prick. Most patients report feeling little to no pain. An achy sensation is completely normal and can indicate that the sensation of “Da Qi” or “The Arrival of Qi” has been achieved. This indicates that the acupuncture point has been activated.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Treatment plans at Living Well Chiropractic & Massage in Bainbridge Island are scheduled based up on pain severity and duration and prognosis of the condition. A typical plan will often be two treatments for the first two weeks and then an exam to reassess your condition around 4 weeks. The goal is to get the treatment hold for one week and then two or more weeks and then we would get down to monthly treatments or “As needed” for pain management.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Tracking progress: Chinese herbal medicine does not typically work as quickly as pharmaceuticals. One shouldn’t expect to notice a significant difference immediately upon taking the herbs, however, improvements each week are typical. In some cases it can take around 2-4 weeks to start seeing progress. We are working to nourish deficiencies and reduce accumulations of toxins within the body by slowly changing your internal energetic environment and harmonize imbalances.
Be prepared for changes: Each formula prescribed is tailored to the patient’s symptomatic needs at that moment in time. This means that each week your practitioner will assess your progress so that they may modify the composition of ingredients as to suit your ever-changing needs. This may cause the price of your herbs to vary slightly by a few dollars each week.
What to bring:
- A list of all current medications and supplements that you are taking;
- A list of all known allergies and types of reactions you experience if exposed;
- A list of current dietary restrictions;
- Contact information for your primary care provider so that your herbalist may be in contact with your doctor regarding your care.
We value collaborative care, because we believe that this optimizes treatment effectiveness and results. It is also important that each healthcare practitioner you are working with is aware of what types of substances you are always taking to reduce the risk of herb and drug interactions.
Effects of herbal medication: It is common to see changes in digestion, bowel movements, energy levels and sleep habits while taking Chinese herbs. We will track these changes weekly as this is part of the “Tailoring-your-formula-to-fit-you” process.
