Dealing With Headaches and Migraines

What Are Migraine Headaches?
Migraine pain is caused by vasodilation in the cranial blood vessels (expansion of the blood vessels), while headache pain is caused by vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels). Migraines headaches are serious, and affect many people. The pain can acute, and for many patients it leaves them unable to function. The traditional medical system relies on prescription medication for this issue because none of the over-the-counter treatments work in most cases, but for many people that’s not enough. It’s important to find the source of what’s causing the problem and chiropractors are dedicated in both finding and treating the source.

There are many symptoms that can occur before a headache or migraine starts. Hallucinations, depression or extreme irritation are just some of the symptoms that patients experience. Often those with migraines will work to avoid light, have an intolerance to loud noises, experience nausea and vomiting to name a few precursors.

Patients with migraine headaches commonly report the following attributes:

  • 75% report associated neck pain
  • 70% have a family history of migraine headaches
  • 50% report known triggers, like changes in weather, stress, lack of sleep, alcohol consumption, and eating certain foods
  • 46% report nasal congestion

How Do We Get Migraine Headaches?
We often get misalignments or dysfunction in the joints of the neck from trauma such as falls or car accidents. Other habits can make us susceptible: Repetitive stress such as hours of work on a computer, poor posture or simply general stress can takes its toll over time. In many patients, it is a combination of activities that took place often years before which has led to chronic and recurring headaches.

Can Chiropractic Care Help?
What most people don’t realize is that mechanical dysfunction of the vertebrae of the neck will cause increased muscle tension as well as irritate the delicate nerves that control blood flow into the head. Improving the movement or alignment of the bones in the neck can relieve the pressure and irritation that results in headaches.

Within his examination, Dr. Brian will attempt to rule out other more serious causes, which can occur but are more rare. Nerve function by checking reflexes, sensation and muscle strength as well as correlating information like positions that decrease arm or leg pain will be included as any position that reduces pain in the arm or leg must be incorporated into an exercise. He also evaluates the jaw or TMJ for involvement.

Dr. Brian often recommends weekly massage therapy and trigger point pressure releases pain caused by tension and contraction (an involuntary effort to manage symptoms). He may also recommend regular exercise and nutritional counseling.
